Walkupy Events New Years Eve: Your Help Needed!

December 30, 2011 in News

OK folks, it’s go time. Walkupy will arrive in Winston between 1 and 3pm tomorrow (12/31). Here’s what we know, and here’s what you can do to help.

I. Walkupy arrives in Winston at the Besthesda Center between 1 and 3 pm and will immediately move into feeding the homeless (as many as 50 people).

II.  After the meal we will walk from the Bethesda Center to City Hall, to arrive at City Hall around 4:00. This is not an official “march” or “parade” so be sure to obey all traffic laws (eg, wait for a green light to cross intersections). We will hold a rally (officially called a “picket”), and we have received a permit for up to 100 people; if more show than we can accommodate by separating into smaller groups. This will include a Mic-check stating our particular local and national concerns.

III.  Following the rally there will be a potluck dinner at Marvin United Methodist Church. 4401 Indiana Ave, Winston-Salem, NC 27105-2513

IV. Later in the evening there will be a New Year’s Eve party, TBA.

What can you do?

1. We need your presence!

2. Invite friends

3. For the homeless meal:

a. Agree to bring one or more of the following:

1. plates, cups, forks, napkins

2. Sandwiches of all sorts

3. potato salad, cole slaw

4. drinks (soda, water, tea)

5. ice, trashbags

6. dessert

7. other

b. Agree to serve

4. For the walk: Agree to walk and bring a friend

5. For the rally at City Hall: Agree to participate, and bring a friend!

6. For the Pot Luck: Agree to bring food and drink.

7. Contact civic groups and/or churches to get more support.

Please email Mike McGuire right away and let me know what you are committing to for this event (e.g., “I will bring 25 ham and cheese sandwiches”): http://occupywinstonsalem.org/members/01234mike/ (call him if you already have his #!)

I’m sorry the specific times could not be better calculated, but it is hard for Walkupy to be exact due to the nature of the movement, ie, walking long distances.

Remember, what YOU do right now will make or break this event!
